Sound system optimisation seminar in Nailsworth, UK: details

This seminar provides guidance on how to improve the quality of your sound system. We will guide you through the optimisation process in theory and practice.


Participants should be conversant with sound system design, set up and commissioning. General knowledge of acoustic measurement systems is advantageous. To be able to participate in the hands-on part, please bring the following with you: Laptop computer (Windows PC or Apple computer with BootCamp and native Windows installation) and full-duplex audio interface with two inputs and two outputs on XLR connectors (please bring adaptors to XLR if your interface has different connectors). Please make sure that the audio interface is working properly with your computer.

We will be using a common software platform (Tuning Capture) for the seminar, so that everybody is able to perform measurements in the same way. A full licence of this software will be handed out as part of your seminar documentation on the seminar day.

Due to time constraints, participants must arrive with a comprehensive understanding of; basic electroacoustics principles such as frequency/wavelength relationship, phase, and addition and subtraction of sound waves. A refresher session at our regular Electroacoustics seminar is advisable.

The goal

The participants should be able to optimise a sound system with a newly acquired theoretical and practical knowledge and the help of a computer- based measurement system.


Introduction, System Design and 'pre flight check'
Through theoretical and practical exercises we will explain the sound system that will be used during this seminar, and the essential system checks that should be performed before starting any sound system optimisation process.

Early listening
We will familiarise ourselves with the system “starting point”, which is the system state prior to any adjustments.

Frequency response
The question of defining the right target frequency response will be answered during a discussion. The spectral power contained in normal signals and psychoacoustic effects like the curves of equal loudness will be interwoven to get to a useful result.

Optimisation process
This involves a step by step path through the tuning of the system. The frequency response, the TOP-SUB alignment and the tuning and alignment of fill loudspeakers will be performed in theory and practice.

After listening to the complete tuned system, the seminar will be rounded up with a questions and answers session.


The content is conveyed in a format that uses practical examples and encourages participants to exchange experiences and play an active role.
