Port of Lost Wonder invests in d&b

A d&b audiotechnik installation recently took place at Singapore’s first kids club by the beach: Port of Lost Wonder (POLW), on Sentosa Island. Port of Lost Wonder is the latest attraction on Palawan Beach, and caters to families with children below twelve years of age.

The beachfront kids club is home to a signature Pirate Ship water play area, picnic grounds, play zones, retail space and a restaurant area. The outdoor setting and expanse of the venue required detailed planning with regards to the sound system, as well as the locations of the loudspeakers. The saline conditions at the beach and the challenges presented by the weather were also key considerations in the planning stages.

‘POLW requires superior audio intelligibility so that public announcements are crystal clear,’ said Nicholas Tan, design and technical support, Island Technical Services, Sentosa Leisure Group. ‘In addition, the place required fairly high SPLs as there is a lot of ambient noise created by the children playing.’

The recommended system was the installation of eight Ti10 loudspeakers, which are augmented with two V-SUBs for the low end, all of which are powered and processed by three D12 amplifiers. These are mounted on a mobile rack adjacent to the retail shop, restaurant and indoor play area. The combination of the Ti10 loudspeakers and V-SUBs provide ‘deep lows and clean, crisp highs’ as they would at a theatre.

d&b audiotechnik has notched up a roll call of references in Singapore since installing a Q- Series loudspeaker system at the Esplanade Theatres by the Bay in 2002. Other places to take on this system include a number of churches, banquet halls, theatres, artistic venues, further education campuses and rehearsal studios.
